About Non-Smokers Smoking

Non-Smokers Smoking is a portraiture project intended to capture the relationship between a person and an object, in this case a cigarette. Participants were photographed between March and August of 2015 and are all self professed current non-smokers, the only stipulation for eligibility. Subjects range from former chain smokers to those who "have one socially, on rare occasions" to cigarette virgins. The project strives to show a range of humor, awkwardness, dis/comfort, and playfulness, and to briefly suspend the social stigmas associated with cigarette smoking, in order to focus on the aesthetic of the act itself, and the personalities of those who participated.

The photos were shot using a Minolta X-700 camera, on 35mm black and white film (mostly Ilford Delta 3200).
